BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — There were fresh hauls as far as the eye could see at the Boston Seaport's historic Fish Pier Sunday for the annual Boston Seafood Festival.
Hosted by the non-profit Boston Fisheries Foundation since 2012, the event supports and celebrates Boston as an epicenter of the fishing industry.
"It’s all native, it’s all local fish," said foundation president Chris Basile. "We’re in the hub of the universe when it comes to seafood and we have it all here."
"The best thing with the seafood is get the freshest stuff possible, and that’s the beauty of living in Boston," noted chef Dan Haley.
Thousands flocked to the festival to sample the best local fish that vendors had to offer, all to boost angler education.
"We’re raising money for scholarship funds for our local American Culinary Federation chapters," said Nashua Country Club Executive Chef Joe Allison as he grilled up fresh pink shrimp at his booth.
Visitors could also quench their thirst at a few beer gardens, watch demos from renowned chefs, and even take part in an oyster shucking contest.
"When you go up there, you’re already a winner, because not too many people will put their reputation on the line," said Jimmy McDunnell of the Matunuck Oyster House in Rhode Island.
