Boston Sports Legends Talk Sports, Life With Local Students

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Two Boston sports legends spent time with Boston students Wednesday at a sports clinic passing on some of the lessons they learned throughout their storied careers.

Former Red Sox great Pedro Martinez and New England Patriots legend Tedy Bruschi made an appearance at the Reggie Lewis Center in Roxbury talking to kids from the Hennigan School in Jamaica Plain.

Joining Martinez and Bruschi were former U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team midfielder Heather O’Reilly and 2014 Boston Marathon champion Meb Keflezighi.

Bank of America hosted the 'Sports With Us' clinic.

It's part of a series of clinics being held across the country designed to inspire the next generation by teaching sports and life skills and building strong communities.

Martinez shared some wise words about winning ahead of talking to the 100-plus students.

He said while winning is the ultimate goal, sometimes the most valuable lessons he ever learned came from losing. "A lot of people think failure is bad," Martinez said. "And yes, it feels bad. But it really helps to tell you the difference between failure and success. None of us have gone through a sport without failing."

Bruschi reflected on his experiences growing up in San Francisco and playing with just a ball, a friend, and a patch of grass.

That's where he said he developed a deep passion for sports. "It's something that a lot of kids just love to do, and I loved it also, he said.

Along with hearing about their instructors' personal experiences and lessons learned along the way, the students rotated between six activity stations related to football, baseball, endurance, and financial health.
