BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Hundreds of Boston University students got a lesson in gravity, inertia, and momentum Friday at the 16th annual Pumpkin Drop.
Dozens of pumpkins filled with mustard, ketchup, pudding, Fruity Pebbles, barbecue sauce, whipped cream, and other substances were pushed off the roof of the Metcalf Center for Science and Engineering by the university's physics department. Pictures of physics professors were taped on the ground below as a target.
"You can’t push it off of the roof too hard because it will go way too far, and we have to land on the professors’ faces," said student Grace.

Professor and department chair Shyamsunder Erramilli figured that they aimed for his photo the most, but he did not mind it.
"I think it’s great fun and an excellent illustration of Newton’s laws," Erramilli told WBZ NewsRadio.
This was the first BU Pumpkin Drop since 2019. All of the pumpkins dropped were composted afterwards.
Billy Corgan did not attend.
