BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Boston is waging a battle against rats, one trash bin at a time.
Twenty new rat proof trash containers were installed in the North End as a response to the growing number of complaints from residents.
The new containers will replace the old open containers found on the North End’s busiest main streets that are filled with restaurants and are easily accessed by rats, other rodents, and birds. They are equipped with a pull-down shelf drawer that closes tight and prevents any rodents or seagulls from dumpster diving.
“So, we have a drawer with the foot pedals so if someone doesn’t want to touch the drawer, it just contains everything nicely,” Daniel Nee, Superintendent of Street Operations for the Public Works Department said. “I think it looks pretty sleek I like the black color; I think it's a good, innovative way to get the rats out of the city,” said Olivera, a resident.

Olivera added that she has noticed rat problems particularly around Boston Common in the summer when more people are dining out in the area.
“It’s delightful! Lois who works in the city, said. I think it’s actually really great.”
The city said that more containers will be installed in other rodent-riddled neighborhoods.
