SOMERVILLE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Boston will be starting off 2025 with an extra serving of winter as a weekslong cold stretch is predicted to affect the area.

From now through mid-January, the high temperature will be below the 40-degree mark every day, with even lower real feel temperatures.

According to CBS News Boston Chief Meteorologist Eric Fisher, it is predicted to be the longest stretch of sub-40 temperatures the area has seen since 2018.

WBZ NewsRadio spoke to a local group of cyclists in Somerville, and Jackson said that managing the cold all depends on your perspective.

“I feel like the key is to always have something worse,” one cyclist, Jackson, said. “We’re biking out to Nahant, so I’ve got my towel in my bag and maybe I’ll take a little swim when we get out there. I feel like if you have that on the horizon, this doesn’t seem so bad.”

Jackson and his biking friends planned to take a 15-mile ride to the shoreline to watch the sunrise. Andrew is also part of the group and bikes to work most days even in the cold.

“There’s a famous saying somewhere that there’s no such thing as bad weather, it’s just [having] improper clothing and gear,” he said.

Andrew also had a special pair of booties to help keep his feet warm as he pedals.

Some, however, are not as ready for the cold stretch as others and have been caught off-guard after 2024 ended on a warmer note.

“I don’t know if I’m ready yet. I think it’s something [that] I need to prepare for,” one resident said.

Dario said that while he doesn’t like the cold, he believes that it’s important to be prepared for the unexpected.

“I wear double pants, double jackets, two shirts, etc.” he said.

As far as seasons in Massachusetts go, winter was not on the top of Dario’s list.

“I only like autumn or spring; that’s the best weather.”
