CHICAGO, Ill. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Sarah Bohan was on personal best pace for the Chicago Marathon on Sunday, but when she spotted a stray kitten lost and scared on the side of the road, instincts kicked in.

The Beacon Hill neighbor picked up the furrball and walked over a mile along the route with fellow runner Gia Nigro to find someone to look after the animal. A self-proclaimed cat mom stepped up to the plate from the spectator's crowd and the pair of runners were able to finish the remainder of the race.

Coincidentally, Bohan ran for Team PAWS Chicago, an animal welfare organization that works to find thousands of stray cats and dogs homes each year.

"The only way I saw it was because I was running on the side and not in the crowd. The kitten was dirty, scared, and skinny, and looked to be separated from its mother. When I picked it up it was matted and I knew it was a stray. At that moment my instincts kicked in and I forgot all about my personal record. As a cat mom to two strays, I had to help this kitten," Bohan said.

Those interested can still donate to Bohan's page despite the race being over.
