Boston Youth Baseball Programs Mark Saturday As Opening Day

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Red Sox Foundation’s Reviving Baseball in Inner-Cities (RBI) program, and Jr. RBI, had their opening day on Saturday at Jim Rice Field in Roxbury.

Hundreds of kids came out for the event. According to Red Sox Foundation program specialist Mick Blume, there are 35 teams in the program, and seven Jr. RBI leagues in the city.

“We’re close to 2,000 [kids] this year, and we’re looking to always expand and get into every neighborhood,” Blume said.

The RBI program is intended for kids 9-18 years old. The program intends “to promote the importance of good decision-making through development of good nutrition, leadership, respect for others, nonviolent conflict resolution, and an overall commitment to one’s potential and to the community,” according to the Red Sox Foundation website.

The Jr. RBI sets out to introduce baseball to children 5-12 years old.

“It’s a big celebration of our youth, kicking it off with a lot of food, and activities, and equipment. They get their uniforms,” Blume said.
