BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A speed limit enforcement for e-bikes went into effect in New York City last week.
Officials from the New York City Department of Transportation implemented a 15mph speed limit in hopes to increase street and traffic safety across the city.
But would that same measure work in Boston?
Ana, a regular e-bike rider, told WBZ NewsRadio that speed is what makes riding e-bikes worth it.
“They do go fast,” she said. “I always warn people who haven’t ridden them before that there’s some power underneath of you. Which scared me the first time.”
Blue Bike e-bike motors only go up to 18mph. There's currently no speed limit restrictions for e-bikes in Massachusetts.
“I mean if they’re only able to go up to 18 [mph], there isn’t much need to cap it at 15," Sam said. "I think 18 is reasonable."
Some other residents are open-minded with the speed restriction.
“I think the more safety measures the better on the road,” John said.
Elaine, who’s had her share of close calls, added that safety should be a priority.
“I walk around everywhere in the city, and I gotten almost hit many times,” she said. “So, if they had to go slower, that would be better.”
