SAUGUS, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — It may be an end to an era for long-time Massachusetts restaurant, Kowloon, off Route 1.

Plans to redevelop the existing property where the restaurant resides are making strides. That means the iconic building will cease to exist.

“[That’s] kind of upsetting because it’s a landmark,” Dan told WBZ NewsRadio. “It’s been here for 75 years.”

The Wong family, owners of Kowloon, first announced their plans to revamp the property five years ago.

Earlier this week, a first look into the proposal was revealed to the Saugus Planning Board, which included two six-story mixed-used housing. This would include around 200 apartments units and commercial space.

“Just [that] the time is changing,” Scott added. “I’m okay with it.”

The owners reassured fans of the restaurant that the business is not going anywhere.

A smaller version of Kowloon will also be housed in one of the two buildings, fixed with indoor and outdoor seating and a drive-thru.

The proposal still needs to be approved by the town’s planning board.
