BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — An executive order directing the U.S. Department Of Education to disband is said to be signed into action soon.
A draft of the order has reportedly been finished, and President Donald Trump is expected to sign it into effect within the coming days. The order would direct Linda McMahon, the current Secretary of Education, to dissolve the department completely.
The Department of Education oversees multiple areas, such as funding for schools in need and protection of student civil rights. If the department was dissolved, several passing through Logan Airport questioned what that would mean for younger generations in the future.
“If we want better for the United States of America, then we need to invest in our children, and if we can’t invest in our children then our future is pretty grim,” said Tara of Ayer.
“[It’s a] huge mistake and it will disadvantage so many people and so many students.” said one Boston resident, who didn’t want to be named.
Others said it’s simply out of their control.
“I don’t want their education to be diminished by any means, but at the same time— it’s what the people voted for, right?” one man told WBZ NewsRadio. “It’s unfortunate but they’re the party in [the] position right now with power.”

While only Congress holds the power to close the department, it could encourage cuts to more education staff, programs, and grants. Boston Mayor Michelle Wu recently spent a day in Washington D.C., speaking before Congress about said budget cuts.
