BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Support is growing for a new professional women’s basketball team in Boston.

Boston Women’s Basketball Partners are exploring the idea of bringing a Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) team to the city. The group is led by Donnie Wahlberg and former professional basketball player and Hamilton native Michael Carter Williams, according to the Boston Globe.

Eileen is a longtime women’s basketball fan and was happy to hear that others also want to see professional women’s basketball in Mass.

“I grew up in an era where there were no women’s sports, even in high school,” said Eileen.

Drew has a daughter who plays basketball and would love to see more local role models for young girls to look up to.

“[It’s an] opportunity for the young girls to be inspired by the professional athletes,” said Drew.

While it is still far from a reality, support has been growing from Causeway Street to City Hall.

“To have a women’s team in a city as well as a men’s team [would] definitely be my preference. I like the women’s game more,” said another basketball fan.

“[It’s] a no-brainer for the next team. We’re obviously a hub for women’s sports fans,” said Christine.
