BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — President Donald Trump signed an executive order Monday that ends “the use of paper straws,” but some Bostonians are against the move.

“Plastic is devouring this world,” Chris of Holliston said.

Trump’s executive order reverses an order that former President Joe Biden signed last year, which aimed to “reduce single-use plastics” in the federal government.

“These things don’t work,” President Trump said to reporters, citing health and environmental concerns in paper straws.

According to a White House press release, paper straws contain “forever chemicals” and produces “larger carbon footprint” than plastic straws. In President Trump’s executive order, the federal government is directed to stop purchasing paper straws for federal buildings effective immediately.

“That’s somebody who doesn’t know about pollution or the environment or anything like that,” Matthew of Framingham said.

However, Mike from Atlanta feels indifferent since plastic is already everywhere. “You got plastic bags, you got plastic everywhere so what’s wrong with straws,” he said. “They got better things to worry about.”

Meanwhile, the Massachusetts Senate passed a legislation last summer banning single use-plastic bags and making straws and utensils available upon request only. This is part of state leader’s efforts to build on the Commonwealth’s climate goals.
