BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Boston’s Freedom Trail gets a festive makeover for the holiday season.

The Freedom Trail Foundation is offering the Historic Holiday Strolls along with a variety of other popular walking tours where visitors embark on a journey to learn about the historic sights and stories of the city.

Starting now until the end of the year, tour guides, like Jeremiah, hang up their colonial getup for Victorian top hats.

“I have big sideburns, and I actually think they go much better with the Victorian apparel than the colonial apparel,” long time tour guide Jeremiah told WBZ NewsRadio.

The Historic Holiday Strolls explore how Boston’s holiday traditions evolved throughout the years, specifically how author Charles Dickens and one of his story helped reshape the beloved holiday in this town.

According to Jeremiah, Puritans were not a fan of Christmas and banned the holiday. That’s until Dickens’ ‘A Christmas Carol’ came into the picture.

“Charles Dickens visited Boston in 1857 and gave a public reading of a Christmas Carol just a block from here [at the Tremont Temple Baptist Church] and that book is what kind of gave us the Christmas traditions we know today,” Jeremiah said, adding that is was turned into something warm and family oriented.

The Historic Holiday Stroll takes place on select Fridays and Saturday until the end of the year. Tickets are $20 for adults and $20 for children, and reservations can be made on their website.
