BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) —  A piece of Boston’s history will come to an end this weekend. Matthews Arena will be closing its doors after this Saturday’s Northeastern-Boston University men’s hockey game. The Northeastern-owned facility will be deconstructed for a new state-of-the-art facility, which is set to be ready in 2028.

The 115-year-old arena even predates the opening of Fenway Park. The arena even played host for the Boston Bruins and Boston Celtics, before the creation of the old Boston Garden.

As the doors close, one era ends, allowing a new chapter of Boston sports and entertainment to begin on historic ground that has seen the likes of sports legends like Babe Ruth and presidents like Teddy Roosevelt skate and speak upon its surface.

The puck drops at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec.13, the arena’s final game, which will feature a special ceremonial puck drop with Hockey Hall of Famers, Jack Parker and David Poile. Following the game, an on-ice ceremony will be held as the city says farewell to 94 seasons of hockey history in the arena.
