BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Boston’s National Women’s Soccer League team will now be known as Boston Legacy Football Club, the team announced Wednesday morning.
“The club aspires to create its own new legacy that is true to the city, true to the fan, and true to the sport,” said the team in a press release.
The original team name, BOS Nation FC, was unveiled in October. The name and the marketing campaign, which claimed there were “too many balls in Boston,” were widely criticized.
The team promptly apologized, saying “we missed the mark.”
Earlier this month, the team announced a rebrand after getting feedback from fans and stakeholders.
The team said it decided on the name Boston Legacy FC after five months of surveys, fan listening sessions and conversations with brand advisors.
“Our name is just the beginning,” said club controlling owner Jennifer Epstein. “It’s what we build together, through dedication, commitment, and grit that will give it life. We aim for our values to reflect a city that breathes competition, passion, and pride, and to pay tribute to those who paved the way before us, including the gamechangers who helped build previous women’s professional teams in Boston.”
The team said one of the name change advisors was Kristine Lilly, a former member of the United States women’s national soccer team and two-time World Cup champion.
“I look forward to watching the Boston Legacy build a club for a new generation while honoring those who helped build the game. It is an exciting time for women’s soccer and I look forward to cheering on the Boston Legacy,” Lilly said.
The team's first season will be in 2026.
