BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Boston’s Puppet Free Library will be a part of this year’s First Night Parade.

Sara Peattie oversees the hundreds of giant puppets that reside in the library, and she packed dozens of them to be a part of the event.

“It’s birds of night, it’s white birds, there’s a giant glowing owl,” Sara said. “Kids can do them and if you shake them a little, they fly and flap their wings.”

She talked about how the library has been participating in this parade since the very beginning.

“We’ve been doing a section in the First Night Parade in Boston since the beginning of First Night here,” Sara said.

The way they go about finding people to march with the puppets is a bit unorthodox. You don’t need to sign up; anyone at all can join the 60 slots available, up to the very moment the march starts.

Sara will be meeting with the marchers at the City Hall Plaza at 5pm Tuesday, while picking up more potentially interested people coming off the subway. She made it clear that there was no need to be intimidated.

“There are puppets that are difficult to handle, these are not them,” Sara said. “Put yourself into a puppet and we’ll step into the street and parade along.”

When asked if she was nervous about her puppets being damaged, she said no.

“It isn’t even a matter of cost, it’s just more duct tape.”

Beyond the parade, the library lends out their puppets to plays and other shows.
