BOURNE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Routine yardwork turned into a bomb scare for one Bourne homeowner this week. Bourne Police said they were called to 69 Depot Road on Tuesday morning at about 9:30 for a report of an unexploded artillery shell discovered in the homeowner's back yard.
The State Police Bomb Squad and the Bourne Fire Department was called. Officials took a look at the object and found that it was a 105 millimeter training round that didn't contain any explosives.
It was carted off by the bomb squad, but no one needed to be evacuated.
Bourne Assistant Fire Chief David Pelonzi said finding ammunition and shells in that area of the Cape was not uncommon. He said officials discovered a live round in Bourne in November of last year, which had to be detonated by the bomb squad.
