BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — As we head into the St. Patrick’s Day holiday weekend, it also means that the number of people drinking is also expected to rise as well. The Boston Police Department is aware of this and has issued warnings against spiked drinks and has urged victims to report any incidents to the authorities, according to a press release.

The BPD encourages everyone to look out for each other when attending social gatherings by creating a “buddy system” to avoid getting separated, which is a step you can take to ensure your personal safety.

“The Boston Police Department would like to remind the public of the dangerousness of scentless, colorless, and tasteless drugs such as Rohypnol, also known as roofie, being placed in the drinks of unsuspecting victims. Other drugs commonly used in a similar fashion are GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyric acid) or Ketamine. These drugs and substances can cause disorientation, confusion, temporary paralysis, or unconsciousness, along with a host of other symptoms, leaving the potential victim vulnerable,” the press release said.

Some other tips that the BPD has advised people to take when venturing out this weekend include:

  • Watch your drink at all times. Never leave your drink unattended.
  • Take your drink to the restroom if need be.
  • Keep your hand covered over your drink when you’re not looking at it.
  • Get help immediately if you begin to feel dizzy, nauseated, light-headed, or strange in any way.

The BPD also advises that if you observe anyone in distress, wandering alone late at night, or dressed unsuitably for the weather, contact the police immediately.
