BPS Admit Error In Calculating Exam School Eligibility

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Boston Public Schools made an error in the calculations for exam school eligibility for rising 7th graders, school officials said Tuesday.

In a letter to parents, the district said it discovered an error in calculating grade point averages which caused some students to be wrongly told they were eligible to apply for exam school entrance, while others who were eligible were told they were not.

“Although we work with an external auditor to ensure the accuracy of our data, neither the external auditor nor BPS' Office of Data and Accountability (ODA) caught the error before notices were sent out,” the letter read.

According to school officials, they have fixed the mistakes and they will send out new exam school eligibility letters this week. The exam school invitations are still scheduled for May.

BPS also said that they are confident in the new GPA calculations for rising 9th and 10th graders, but are double-checking all grading data to ensure accuracy.
