BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Superintendent Mary Skipper has canceled public schools Friday to accommodate for traffic and crowds during the Celtics' championship parade.

Boston students were scheduled to be dismissed from school on a half-day schedule Friday, but Skipper said that early release would run head-on into the festivities.

All the extra traffic "could mean students waiting for their bus hours after dismissal, being delayed on hot buses for hours without access to food and water or trying to commute home on the MBTA at the same time as the large anticipated crowds, posing major safety and operational concerns for our students and staff," Skipper said in a statement.

The Celtics' parade will start at 11 a.m. Friday on Causeway St. outside T.D. Garden before winding all the way to the Hynes Convention Center.

Friday's closure made Thurs., June 20 the last day of Boston's public school year.

Skipper noted families facing conflicts from the change of schedule can check the Boston Centers for Youth and Families website for facility hours and programs.
