BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Sunday was the first day of a new pilot program that holds the door to museums open for students trying to learn.

Starting on Feb. 4, the first and second Sundays of every month are “BPS Free Sundays,” a program that gives Boston Public School students the chance to visit the city’s leading cultural institutions for free. Students can bring up to three family members for free as well.

The program runs from February to August 2024, giving students free access to The Boston Children’s Museum, The Institute of Contemporary Art, The Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of Science, The New England Aquarium and The Franklin Park Zoo.

Mayor Wu and Boston’s Chief of Arts and Culture Kara Elliot-Ortega were at the Museum of Fine Arts to help kick-off the program.

“The idea is that this is a city that belongs to our young people and we want them to feel at home in every corner of Boston,” said Wu. “It’s really important for our kids to be able to imagine and dream and feel that these are the spaces that belong to them.”

“[We want students] to see the things that are behind these doors as a part of their lives and something that they have not just access to but a sense of connection and belonging in all of these spaces,” said Boston’s Chief of Arts and Culture Kara Elliot-Ortega.

BPS Students can gain entry to the museums by showing their BPS-issued transportation card, printing out the weekly email, or showing the weekly email on a mobile device.
