BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Move over Picasso, Monet, and van Gogh.

Artwork from Boston Public Schools students is on display inside Boston City Hall during the month of March as part of the 30th annual Youth Art Month Exhibition.

More than 300 students from 24 schools contributed to this year's exhibition, which hosted its opening reception Saturday with students, teachers, and city officials in attendance.

First grader Josidan was excited to see his artwork on display.

"It’s that one, it’s 'Rainbow New York City,'" Josidan pointed out to WBZ NewsRadio. "Some of the colors are actually rainbow, and if you mix one of the colors, you actually get a new color."

Sixth grader Rosela was bursting with pride for her painting "Roses" to be hanging on the wall.

"It feels really nice to be, like, recognized by the mayor as well," Rosela said. "It’s really cool."

"Nothing makes me happier than to see how proud they are," said Connie Cummings, an art teacher at Roger Clap Elementary School. "There might be some struggles with academics for some students, but when they can see themselves succeed in one area, it’s just the best."

Anthony Beatrice, Executive Director for the Arts at BPS, said there was a lot to celebrate when it comes to students and the arts.

"We have arts in every single school. It is now a graduation requirement for all of our high school students," Beatrice said.

Next to each painting, drawing, or collage is an artist statement where the student walks the viewer through their thought process.
