BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Thousands of Boston Public School (BPS) students are receiving educational and informative lessons while school is out for the summer.
One of the many organizations participating in the afterschool and beyond program is Courageous Sailing.
“[During this program], dozens of Boston Public School kids are beefing up on their academics and learning to sail,” said Chris Smith, Executive Director of the afterschool program.
“So today it’s about sailing, but across town we have all sorts of activities from MMA (mixed martial arts) to gardening, to STEM,” Smith added.

Mayor Michelle Wu participated in the sailing lesson, joining two BPS students for a ride on the water.
“I am blown away by the two young people in the boat. [They] knew how to navigate [and] knew how to keep us all safe,” Wu said.
Students have also said that the bonds they have formed both on land and at sea have been worthwhile.
“You make a lot of friends from different schools,” said one of the participating students.
