BRAINTREE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Braintree American Little League Team is heading to Connecticut for the regionals.

"This is the biggest thing in sports that they could have done so far," remarked one resident.

The undefeated team beat Walpole 1-0 last week, cementing their status as state champions for the first time in 72 years. This will mark the team's first appearance at the New England regionals, and some of the parents are shocked and amazed by their progress.

"It's almost a surreal thing that that happened," stated one parent.

Braintree will face the Machias Maine, during the first round of the regionals on Saturday. This is also the first time a team from Machias will represent Maine in the regional tournament. The town of Braintree has full faith that the team is prepared for the challenge.

"They know what they are doing," remarked one resident.

The little leaguers are just three games away from securing the coveted world title. Braintree begins several days of regional action against Maine tomorrow at 1 p.m. If Braintree can advance to the New England Regional Championship next week and win, they will advance to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA, representing New England. Regardless of the outcome, the town is beaming with pride over the progress.

"They've been working their butts off for this."

Admission to the regional tournament is free. Supporters can also stream the game on ESPN+.
