BRAINTREE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A ceremony was held on Tuesday in Braintree celebrating a new and more convenient way to travel to Logan Airport.

Elected officials joined the event host, Massport, to officially break ground on the new remote terminal and two multi-level parking garages at the Braintree Logan Express (LEX) site.

Massport said LEX will bring South Shore commuters one step closer to Logan, providing easier and more seamless airport access.

Massport CEO Rich Davey said LEX will be Massport's second remote terminal location, building on the success of the pilot program in Framingham. "The Framingham experiment that we've been running since June has worked," Davey said.

"Thanks to that commitment from our customers who have said we want more of remote terminals allowing us to check in through TSA right here in Braintree, get on a secure bus, and be dropped off like a VIP on the other side of the airport, will be happening here."

Philip Eng, MBTA General Manager, touted the environmental benefits of remote terminals. "This eases pressure on the transportation network, making better use of all our infrastructure that we already have in place."

Other elected officials at the event included Congressman Stephen Lynch and Braintree Mayor Erin Joyce.

Officials said the Braintree LEX will officially open in 2028.
