BRAINTREE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Braintree's ordinance and rules committee will weigh a proposal to rezone the former St. Thomas More Church property at a meeting Wednesday night.
Developer George Clements owns the land. He wants to build 48 age-restricted condominium units on the parcel.
Some locals said they oppose the proposal, even though the church has been closed since 2022.
"We don't need any more condos in this area of the town," one man told WBZ NewsRadio's Chris Fama.
The town's planning board voted to rezone the 12-acre property earlier this month.
Clements initially planned to build 26 single-family homes on the parcel. He has said that plan would require him to tear down the church and chop down many of its surrounding trees. The plan to build condominium units would not require those demolitions, but it would require him to tear down the adjacent former parish school, he said.
Braintree's historical commission will meet on April 1.
The town council will hold a public hearing on April 2.
