BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Bridgewater State University announced Wednesday that it will soon be waiving tuition and fees for in-state undergraduate students whose families make $125,000 or less.

The Bridgewater Commitment will go into effect in fall 2025, applying to both new and returning students.

“I think that would be great,” said Leslie, a Brockton resident that has a granddaughter attending Bridgewater State. “Especially with the economy, [how] it is now, how much it is to go to college.”

Currently, in-state tuition at the school is $11,000 a year, and the new program would make Bridgewater State the most affordable four-year public university in the state.

"At Bridgewater, we believe education is the key to opportunity. The Bridgewater Commitment ensures that middle- and lower-income Massachusetts families can unlock the benefits of an excellent four-year degree,” said the university’s president, Frederick Clark. Jr., in a press release.

Liam, a student at Bridgewater State eligible for the new program, said the waived tuition is just another reason he’s happy to attend.

“They have a ton of resources available to all their students,” Liam said.

The move comes as many other Massachusetts universities are enacting similar initiatives.

Earlier last month the University of Massachusetts announced all its schools in the system will waive tuition and fees for in-state undergraduate students whose families make an adjusted gross income of $75,000 or less.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Brandeis University have also recently announced similar programs for the next school year.
