BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A local Brighton masters student is using her baking skills to pay for school.

Sarah Parkhurst was a professional baker in Texas before her bakery tragically burned down.

“Smoke starts coming down from the rafters and we’re like ‘what’s going on’,” Sarah said. “Maybe this is a sign that I should pursue this other passion of mine.”

This other passion was teaching, as she began to work towards an education master’s degree, specifically focused on educating international students.

She hasn’t hung up the apron, however, as she has continued to bake out of her Brighton home kitchen, selling her creations on Instagram and putting the money towards her education.

Cakes and cookies are her specialty, especially the French macarons she makes, which she’s been told are spot on despite being difficult to make.

“All of my friends and like my family and people that I sell to, they say it’s up to par,” she said.

Sarah said that she’s very happy to be baking again, and she said that she may even go back to it again full time one day.

“Baking is a really joyous thing for me I enjoy being able to just see like the smile on people's faces.”
