BRIGHTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — After winning a local contest for the best pizza in Boston, Ziggy’s on Washington Street in Brighton has been turning out pies at a much faster pace.
After the survey wrapped up in February, the restaurant has seen quite the upswing in customers. The shop outranked heavy hitters in the Boston pizza industry, beating out places like Santarpio’s and Sally’s.
Ziggy's is run by the Hatzieleftheriadis family, and co-owned by the three brothers. Their father ran a pizza shop in Oak Square when they were growing up, making it a homecoming moment for the brothers. It's an unassuming place, with a couple of tables, lit-up menus overhead and things like subs, fries, and their newly-crowned pizza on offer.
The restaurant estimates business has been up 30% in the past few weeks, keeping the pizza flying out the door.
“Like the first week we won, we actually sold out of dough that Saturday night,” Steve Hatzieleftheriadis, one of the brothers, told WBZ NewsRadio. “[We’re] kind of worn out, but we’ve been worn out for three years. You’re never stopping… It’s a good worn out.”
The shop opened after the pandemic, and Steve said the constant attention to ingredients -- especially the dough -- is the secret to their success.
“I mean he [my brother] was in here taking temperatures of the room, temperatures of the water… He’s still making it better.”
