BROCKTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A couple has been hosting the Brockton Kids Road Races for children in their community for almost 50 years, but the upcoming race on Saturday, April 27, will be the last one.

Dave and Judy Gorman’s children were part of Brockton Community Schools' road race program, which was shut down because of budget problems 47 years ago.

The Gormans decided to keep the program alive themselves, and they have been doing just that for decades, impacting thousands of children.

To participate, the children only have to donate a $1 registration fee, and Dave said that the low cost is an important part of the races.

Dave recalled how children who participated years ago are now bringing their own kids to the races. “We had about eight last year that brought up their kids. It made me feel good. They came up and they said this is the highlight.”

Judy added, “They enjoyed the races, and now they brought their children to race too."

Speaking about a potential replacement, Dave shared he would be happy for someone new to take over the tradition as long as “they keep it low cost, the kids are the first priority, don’t yell at kids, just let them run, do their thing.”

Dave added, “I’m going to miss it. But, you know, it’s about time. I’d never worked my job that long.”
