BROCKTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) —  Brockton High School officials are coming down on student cell-phone usage with a new policy ahead of the upcoming school year.

Every Brockton High School student will soon have a new item added to their school supply arsenal besides just backpacks and pencils.

Brockton High School Principal Kevin McCaskill said that the new Yondr pouches will keep cell phones inaccessible to students until they are unlocked at the end of the school day.

According to the Yondr website, phones are placed inside a pouch. "Once inside the phone-free area, the pouch is locked. You will maintain possession of your phone at all times," the website said.

At the end of the school day, students will have to access one of the wall mounted wall devices to unlock their phones.

Brockton High School students have expressed concerns over this new policy, and McCaskill said that they are valid, while also arguing that the phones themselves are a bigger problem.

“When you have students who are listening to music, or listening to podcasts, or even on social media while classes are going on, it’s really problematic,” McCaskill added.

McCaskill also said that the reason the idea of the pouches seems so effective is because it emphasizes what is happening in the moment during the school day.

“We really want to put the focus back on education, where students are focusing on lessons and instruction and most importantly, communicating with each other outside of technology during school hours.”

McCaskill believes this new policy will be a tedious learning experience for everyone until the process is fine-tuned.
