BROCKTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — In a renewed effort to engage students in their studies at Brockton High School, the administration is seeing a significant overhaul, with officials considering rule changes to dress code and phone use policies.

WBZ's Kim Tunnicliffe spoke to Michael Thomas, who will wear two hats in the upcoming school year as the Superintendent of Schools and Brockton High School principal. The current principal, Cynthia Burns, is being moved into a new role as the high school's administration team reorganizes to emphasize academics with the pandemic in the rearview.

"More people are just running around putting out fires, and I'm not saying up there has done a bad job because it's been very difficult with students coming back suffering from the effects of COVID. We need to get more people to get focused on curriculum instruction because our students are not where they need to be academically," Thomas said.

Thomas went on to say that freshmen failure rates skyrocketed after the pandemic.

"Another thing is getting them back engaged in school, because quite frankly, a lot of the high school kids will just not go to class," Thomas said.

The school district, which is one of the largest in Massachusetts, is also pondering new school student safety measures.
