BROCKTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Brockton's school committee announced new security measures to curb student violence Tuesday.

Superintendent Dr. James Cobbs said the district will hire 12 new security personnel and a new security director before the 2024-25 school year.

It will also change the locks on 1,400 doors to keep students out of vacant classrooms.

The district is considering scanning students' ID cards when they board school buses. One company estimated the project could cost $180,000, Cobbs said.

Brockton High School has been the main subject of national headlines touting the district's chaos.

Principal Kevin McCaskill said the high school is on the upswing.

"The reducing of violence is something that we have committed to and it is beginning to happen," McCaskill said. "We still have a ways to go."

An outside company will release its district-wide safety audit by the end of June, Superintendent Cobb said.
