BROOKLINE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — An underground explosion along Route 9 in Brookline blew off four manhole covers Wednesday evening.
The incident happened at around 6 p.m. on Boylston St. during rush hour; traffic was shut down in both directions as firefighters and electric and gas company crews were called to the scene.
The explosion damaged some windows on nearby buildings, but no injuries or damaged cars were reported.
Crews are still investigating what caused the underground explosion.
“Something ignited it, possibly electricity, but we’re not 100 percent sure of that yet,” said Brookline Fire Deputy Chief Patrick Canney.
Route 9 has since reopened in both directions.
