BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Players from the Boston Bruins' 1970 and 1972 Stanley Cup Champion teams finally got to raise a banner to the rafters at TD Garden Saturday.
The club is celebrating five different eras of the team's history on "Eras Nights" as part of the centennial season. Saturday's game against the Montreal Canadiens celebrated the 1960-1976 "Big Bad Bruins Era."
During that time period, the Bruins won the Stanley Cup in 1970 and 1972, but never had a ceremony to raise the banner.
More than 50 years later, Bobby Orr, Phil Esposito, Johnny Bucyk, Dallas Smith, and other players from those teams walked onto the ice before Saturday's game to hoist the banners.
"Seeing it done in other cities and how they've gone about it, it meant a lot to our guys," said former forward Wayne Cashman, 78, a member of both winning teams. "You really feel the championship and how you strive to win it when you get to raise the flag."
The next Era Night will be Dec. 16 against the New York Rangers, where the Bruins will celebrate the 1977-1985 era they are calling "Lunch Pail A.C."
