BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) —  A series of bicycle and scooter thefts near the campus of Boston University has law enforcement issuing a warning to students.

The BU Police Department says 26 thefts were reported in September.

Many of the stolen bicycles and scooters were secured with cable or chain locks at outdoor bike racks.

"One of the kids on my lacrosse team had his bike locked up and he had one of the rope locks," said Mike Luce, a BU student. "His bike got stolen, and he had to get a new one."

Campus police said they are investigating the thefts, and anyone with information can provide it to authorities anonymously.

The use of high-quality steel U-locks or similar robust locks are recommended.

"I've heard that the U-locks are really hard to cut through," Mike said.

Authorities said secured bike rooms or cages should be used if available.

Bikes and scooters should also be registered with the BU Cycle Kitchen
