CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — While maple syrup isn’t harvested in New England until the spring, Tuesday was celebrated as National Maple Syrup Day.
At diners, restaurants, and breakfast tables across the region, people were enjoying the sweet and comforting taste of maple syrup on everything from pancakes and waffles to bacon and sausage.
At Donut Villa Diner in Cambridge, customers eating stacks of pancakes smothered in warm syrup said every day should be maple syrup day— and Alex, the diner's general manager, agreed.
"We pretty much use three gallons of maple syrup per week," he said. "That's a lot of maple syrup."
Alex added that customers often use maple syrup on their vegan dishes as well.
A regular customer named Peter was sipping coffee and reading the newspaper at the diner’s counter.
He’s not afraid to admit he’s got a soft spot for the condiment born from trees.
"I don't put it on anything weird, just maybe waffles and pancakes," Peter said.
Another customer said he has an inside connection to what he considers the best maple syrup: the Sugar Shack at Taft Hill Farm in Townshend, Vermont.
The restaurant is owned and operated by Robert and Kathy DuGrenier.
"[A] Friend of mine has a sugar shack up in Vermont, and I'm very partial to their flavored syrup," he said.
