Cambridge Police told WBZ NewsRadio that they requested the cameras after hearing about an increase in crime in Central Square over the summer.

Local resident Harry said that he doesn’t think additional surveillance is a bad idea.

“At night if anything happens, it’s always on camera so, it’s always a better option to have it,” he said.

Devante, another local resident, feels differently about the issue. He’s been living in Cambridge his whole life and doesn’t think that visible cameras will help stop crime, it will just move it to another location.

“Crime is everywhere you can’t really stop something that is already here,” he added.

Cambridge Police said in a statement that “the goal of the surveillance policy is to “balance the capacity of surveillance technology to improve the delivery of City services with the importance of maintaining an individual’s right to privacy.”

Police also said that the cameras would gather information 24/7 but would not be monitored around the clock. They also added that they did not have a time frame for when the cameras would be installed.
