CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) The city of Cambridge is moving to install bike lanes along Broadway, sparking a debate among residents.

The city said the project would eliminate around 60% of residential parking in the area. The Broadway Parking Coalition has created a petition against the changes, with around 700 signatures.

Bicycle advocates and those who oppose the plan butt heads at a community meeting last month.

The bike lanes would be installed between Quincy and Portland streets, according to the city. It’s part of the Cambridge Cycling Safety Ordinance, the 2019 law requiring the city to add more bike lanes to reduce cyclist deaths and injuries.

Some cyclists in the area seem supportive of the plan, but want to learn more.

“I know people like parking, but for me it would depend on how they actually implement the bike lane, like I don’t love the one on Beacon Street, but I do like the one on Cambridge Street,” said one local cyclist.

Others said the bike lanes wouldn’t make a difference.

“Don’t put those bike lanes because again, living in Boston, nobody uses the bike lanes,” said Jov from Boston, who occasionally bikes on Broadway.

The deadline for bike lane installation is Nov. 1, 2026 under the Cambridge Cycling Safety Ordinance.
