CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — As Massachusetts works towards growing micromobility in the Commonwealth, residents of Cambridge are conflicted.

The Special Commission on Micromobility was established April 2025 in hopes of expanding the use of e-bikes and scooters to reduce emissions and increase economic vitality.

According to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, “The Special Commission on Micromobility is charged with producing a study that includes: A review of current state and local laws and regulations for micromobility vehicles; recommendations to regulate micromobility vehicles, including on bike paths, sidewalks and shared use paths; and recommendations to support the expansion of micromobility vehicle use and innovation including shared micromobility options for municipalities.”

This push towards micromobility hasn’t been received positively by all, however, as many in Cambridge would prefer this mode of transportation to be reined in.

“Yeah, it’s wild for scooters and e-bikes right now, they’re everywhere,” one man said. “Sometimes when you’re driving, you can’t see them on the blind spots, and they just whip right past you.”

“It’s just gotten out of control, everywhere,” another man said. “They’re driving them outrageously.”

“One person about a month ago hit the side of my car,” someone else said.

“I think that the people that are on them aren’t following the rules for people who are using motorized vehicles,” one woman said.

The Special Commission on Micromobility is set to release their report on e-bikes and scooters in January.
