BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — For months, rumors about the potential closure of Kennedy-Longfellow Elementary School in Cambridge have been circulating around the community, and Interim Superintendent Dave Murphy alluded to the possibility at Monday’s public meeting.

Murphy told WBZ NewsRadio's James Rojas Thursday that school officials are aware of the urgent need to address this issue but said “this school is not well situated to be successful, and as a school district, we have to take responsibility for that.”

The school serves around 200 students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade, many of whom are considered high-needs, but has been dealing with low test scores and under enrollment.

He added that the administration is working on several plans and strategies, and one of which is transitioning students to other schools in the district.

“That means the equitable distributions of students across all schools so that we can responsibly appropriate resources in a way that can position all students for success,” he explained.

Additionally, a number of staff members would also be relocated to other schools within the district as well.

A final decision will be made by the end of this year.
