CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A postal worker is recovering after a turkey attack landed him in the hospital in Cambridge. The worker, identified as Ed Mitchell by the Boston Globe, told the paper that he was on his usual route around Harvard Square around mid-March when a two of the birds spotted him.
Mitchell said one of the turkeys flew at him, knocking him to the ground. The pair of turkeys then kept pecking at him for a while before being shooed away.
Mitchell tells the Globe he needed a hip replacement for the fall, and will need to be off the jobs for months.
Aggressive turkeys are nothing new in the Boston area. Dozens of complaints about turkeys routinely pop up on the Boston's 311 service request line, whether the birds are alive or otherwise.
Massachusetts is in the middle of the spring turkey breeding season right now. State wildlife officials say male turkeys are often more aggressive between March and May.
