CANTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Canton officials urged residents to circle back and look for any uncashed municipal checks that have been outstanding for a while.

The Town said that over 150 people have varying amounts of cash waiting for them to bring to the bank. Canton issued the uncashed checks to businesses and individuals for any number of reasons.

Canton Finance Director Randy Scollins said he is always surprised when people do not cash the checks they are entitled to. Scollins said a big part of his job is to inform the public that the money is available through mailing out notices and taking advertisement space in the local newspaper.

But Scollins said the effort is necessary to avoid an outcome he thinks would be outside the residents' interests.

"The State would lay claim to these funds, we figured it's in the taxpayers' best interests to manage the process locally, ultimately it was taxpayer money that was paying these bills," Scollins said.
