CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) – A chaotic morning in Cambridge Tuesday morning after a car plunged into the Charles River.
The SUV reportedly drove right through the fence along the side of the Western Avenue Bridge and plummeted into the water below, becoming completely submerged.
Emergency response teams found the car and its lone occupant floating in the water. The person inside appeared to be unscathed from the incident.
Cambridge Deputy Fire Chief Shawn White said they were able to rescue the driver with the help of dive teams.
“After we took care of the victim that was reported to be the only one in the water and in that car, we cleared the vehicle with the divers to make sure that that was true,” White said.
A crane was used to hoist the car out of the river. Water was gushing out of the windows and doors of the vehicle as it became lighter on its way up.
“We did a low-angle rescue on the other side of the bridge where we took care of the individual,” White added, “and brought him up to the ambulance.”
The vehicle was placed on a tow truck and the driver was transported to a local hospital for treatment. He is expected to be okay.
