BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Katie MacDonald beamed as she looked around Castle Island Saturday and saw so many people decked out in purple, the official color of migraine awareness.

"'Cause sometimes the planes are going overhead, like, I want them to see the purple from the air," MacDonald told WBZ NewsRadio.

MacDonald is Director of Operations for Miles for Migraine, a nonprofit dedicated to raising public awareness of migraines, supporting migraine sufferers, and finding a cure. A migraine is an intense headache that can cause throbbing pain, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound.

Saturday was Miles for Migraine's seventh annual two-mile walk and 5K run in Boston. This year, the nonprofit focused on fundraising for migraine research and supporting its free programming.

"Raising funds is challenging, but we have raised $16,700 so far this year, which is more than we raised here last year, and that’s our goal," MacDonald said.

Taylor was one of the many people dressed in purple during the event.

"I have suffered from migraines for over six years now, and so I wanted to get more involved in the community and meet people and feel less alone," Taylor said.

"I have friends who have issues with migraines and so I do it to support them," said Andy, who ran the 5K for a fourth year, "and I also do it because it’s just a beautiful place to do a run, and so I try to do this every year."
