BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Several black cats and kittens were the focus of an adoption drive in Boston's Seaport Friday.

Catit, a cat food and accessory company, teamed up with Black Cat Rescue of Somerville for the event, which was held in Catit's pop-up store at Fort Point Arts Community.

Rescue executive director Jennifer Stott told WBZ NewsRadio that black cats have a harder time getting adopted and experience higher euthanasia rates.

"A lot of it is the superstition," Stott said. "Also, a black coat is a dominant gene, so there is more of them. In the adoption game, people are always looking for something special and the black cats just kind of fade into the background."

That was not the mood at Friday's adoption drive, where visitors came to check out the dark-furred felines.

"I think they’re the cutest and the most lovable," one woman said.

Taya, who brought her young daughter to the event, said, "We only want to adopt a black cat, so we’re out looking for one and we’re going to name the cat Licorice."

One of the cats up for adoption was Midnight, a 3-year-old black cat with special needs.

"She had her tail amputated, has some issues with incontinence," described Stott. "All this because she was attacked by a dog. She’s just been a really resilient, amazing cat, despite the incident with the dog."

There will be two more cat adoption drives at Catit's pop-up store with Sweet Paws Rescue on Saturday and Sunday.
