BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Bat Week started on Sunday and is designed to raise awareness about the need for bat conservation.
Bats may often be feared and perhaps associated with ghouls and vampires, but they play a critical role in our environment. But according to MassWildlife and the Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, bat species are in decline. Of the nine species of bats that live in Massachusetts, five were put on the endangered species list.

Just in time for Halloween, MassWildLife invited residents to celebrate Bat Week by learning about bat conservation, and what can be done to protect the local bats. Tips to help the flying mammals included reducing pesticide usage, leaving dead trees up for them to roost, and building bat houses.
