BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart has been named NBA Defensive Player of the Year for the 2021-22 season.

It is the first time a guard has won the award since Gary Payton of the Seattle Supersonics in the 1995-96 season.

According to voting results shared by the league, Smart garnered 37 first-place votes and soared past Rudy Gobert of the Utah Jazz and Mikal Bridges of the Phoenix Suns to secure the top spot.

The Celtics selected Smart with the No. 6 overall pick of the 2014 NBA draft. He is a two-time All-Defensive selection.
