BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Boston Celtics are being sold to an investor group led by William Chisholm for $6.1 billion, Boston Basketball Partners LLC announced Thursday morning.
It would be the most expensive sale of an NBA team in history. The sale is pending approval by the NBA Board of Governors.
Chisholm is a co-founder and managing partner of Symphony Technology Group, a private equity firm. He is a North Shore native and graduate of Dartmouth college, according to the firm’s website. Chisolm describes himself as a “die-hard Celtics fan.”
“I understand how important the Celtics are to the city of Boston – the role the team plays in the community is different than any other city in the country. I also understand that there is a responsibility as a leader of the organization to the people of Boston, and I am up for this challenge,” Chisholm said in a press release.
The Grousbeck Family, the team’s current owners, said Wyc Grousbeck will remain CEO and governor through the 2027-2028 NBA season.
“Bill is a terrific person,” Grousbeck said in a press release. “His love for the team and the city of Boston, along with his chemistry with the rest of the Celtics leadership, make him a natural choice to be the next Governor and controlling owner of the team. I know he appreciates the importance of the Celtics and burns with a passion to win on the court while being totally committed to the community.”
The new ownership group would also include Rob Hale, a current Celtics owner, Bruce A. Beal, president of Related Companies, and Sixth Street, a global investment firm.
