BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Charlestown Historical Society commemorated the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Bunker Hill.

Descendants of those who fought in the battle were invited to gather at the Bunker Hill Monument Plaza to share stories of their ancestors, followed by a private tour of the Massachusetts Historical Society and a cocktail reception.

Two of these descendants, Dolly from Stoneham and Jim for Philadelphia, found out that they were related through their shared discussions.

“We actually met yesterday, a lot of us discovered that we were in fact cousins, so we are, in fact, cousins,” Dolly said.

Dolly also talked about how she only found out recently that her ancestors fought here, as she only knew that they fought in the Revolutionary War, but not specifically where.

“I had no idea that they were actually at Bunker Hill until a couple of weeks ago,” she said. “It’s hallowed ground and it’s nice to see it commemorated on the 250th.”

Jim talked about walking in the previous day's Bunker Hill Parade and how proud he was to represent his family.

“People during the parade yesterday were clapping for us and thanking us,” Jim said. “I really got the feeling that they were looking directly into my eyes but they were thanking my 5th great grandfather.”

President of the Charlestown Historical Society Julie Hall also spoke at the event, sharing her excitement with the stories and items being shared amongst the group.

“These descendants are so proud of this history, they brought artifacts, journals, letters, things that have been in families’ possession for centuries that have never seen the light of day,” Hall said.
